Rare white kiwi bird born in New Zealand sanctuary

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand: In New Zealand, dead “little blue penguin” have washed up on the beaches in recent months because of La Nina-related a food shortages. One malnourished penguin has been brought to the Antarctic Center in Christchurch, where he will live in a home for “special needs” penguins who are are often victims of another kind of threat. Their broken wings and mangled beaks are the result of run-ins with boats and cats at their breeding grounds on the coasts of New Zealand and Australia. Report filed in May 2011.
